-------- LOXLEY -------- 830 years ago, Richard "the Lionheart", King of England, went to the Third Great Crusade to reclaim the Holy Land. Robin of Loxley, one of the loyal noblemen marching under the King's banner, survived the war and managed to return home. Upon arrival, he found his father murdered and his properties confiscated by the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham, who has taken advantage of the abscense of the King to increase his power. Avowing to avenge his father and fight the tyrant Sheriff, Robin was forced to become an outlaw. He founded the Thieves School to train a rebel force in Sherwood Forest. Upon learning of the rising rebel force in Sherwood, the Sheriff, in a fit of rage, kidnapped Lady Marian, Robin's one true love. Robin must prepare to infiltrate Nottingham Castle in order to stop the Sheriff from marrying her, and to seek revenge for the injustices served upon him. Structure and Concepts ---------------------- - This program is designed for ZX Spectrum 128K and compatibles. As it is programmed in BASIC with ROM calls, it will only work in 128K models with the original 48K ROM (Sinclair and Amstrad). - In tape version, the game can be loaded without loading the Intro. Look for the program "LOXLEY" and load it directly. - Robin' quest will take place in Nottinghamshire and surroundings, where he will train himself and will persuade the outlaws (Merry Men) to help him to infiltrate Nottingham's castle. Upon start, three difficulty levels can be selected. The infiltration and combats in Nottingham success chances are determined by the bow and sword training, and the quality of the weapons. - Robin can travel between towns by using the horse he stole from the Sheriff. He can receive help from other people, particularly from friar Tuck, currently appointed as Director of Studies in the Thieves School, who can intercede to get goods and services. - The life force of Robin is represented in the lower left corner of the screen. The rest of the scoreboard shows the amount of gold coins gathered, the amount of health potions, and the experience and power of the weapons (bow and sword). - The bow and arrows can be shot by pressing fire, aiming and releasing fire, while Robin roams across Nottinghamshire. The sword will only be used during duels with knights. By pressing fire and direction keys, Robin will launch a sword thrust. Pressing just the direction keys, he will perform a block in the desired direction. It's essential to learn the guards' gestures, to anticipate blocks and increase counter-attack chances. - To get through doors, press down in front of them. - To drink health potion, press down. - The Out-of-Contest version is identical to the BASIC Contest version, except it is compressed and uses machine code in loader. Control Options --------------- Redefinable keys, plus Kempston, Sinclair and Cursor Joysticks. Default keys: O - Left P - Right Q - Up A - Down Spc - Fire H - Pause R - Abort Trivia ------ - Loxley is the remake of Robin Hood (December 1991), originally based in the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", starred by Kevin Costner and directed by Kevin Reynolds. The original version featured three parts (Intro, bow fight and sword fight), two of which were programmed in standard Basic and the other one was programmed with Beta Basic 1.8, including some generic machine code routines for scroll, sounds, etc. - The remake, Loxley, is programmed in Interpreted Sinclair Basic with ROM calls, under the premise of not executing any machine code in RAM (PC register always in #0000-#3FFF range). It will be submitted to the Bytemaniacos' Basic contest 2022. Credits ------- Programmed by Ariel Ruiz. Music (c) Richard 'Kulor' Armijo.
