O-Puzz Attack!! - ZX Spectrum game based on the mechanics of the Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack/Puzzle League saga, by oblo@2018-2026 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This game is free (no charge for it and you can use it freely) and was made simply for joy&fun. You can use the compiled game and the source code for your personal use. You can't sell it, rent it, or have any other monetary or non-monetary profit with it. You're free to modify and improve the game. If any part of the source code is reused, a mention to the original author is advised. Created with BorIDE 0.5 and ZX Basic Compiler 1.19. Improved with ZX Basic Studio and Claude Sonnet 5.5. Tested with Spectaculator, Fuse, The Spectrum, and ZX Spin emulators. All rights reserved for their respective owners (Nintendo and/or any other company/person who owns them). Versions: * 48K (v1.29): runs on any ZX Spectrum (48K, 128K, +2, +2A/+2B, +3), with beeper sound. Load it with LOAD "". * 128K (v2.08): for ZX Spectrum 128K, +2, +2A/+2B and +3. Load it from the 128K menu (Tape Loader). Same game, plus AY music and sound effects. How to play: * Swap two side-by-side blocks with the cursor and line up 3 or more of the same kind in a row or a column to clear them. * The field keeps rising from the bottom (you can also raise it yourself to get new blocks faster). If the blocks reach the top, the game is over. * When cleared blocks make others fall and clear again, that's a chain (x2, x3, x4...). Clearing 4 or more blocks at once is a combo, with bonus points. Special shapes (L, T, crosses, long lines) also give extra points. Game modes: * 1 PLAYER: survive as long as you can and beat the HI-SCORE and the HI-TIME. Speed 1 to 9; the speed goes up every 15 clears. * VS CPU: a ladder of 10 rivals, each one a bit tougher than the previous, each with its own portrait and lines before and after the match. Stage 5 is the Mid-Boss and stage 10 the Final Boss. Clears and chains send garbage blocks to the other field: clear blocks next to the garbage to turn it back into normal blocks. CPU level: Easy, Mid or High. Your score carries over from rival to rival; if you lose, you can RETRY the same rival. Beat all 10 rivals to see the ending. * RULES (both modes): Normal, or It's Raining Blecks! [hallelujah!], where blocks also fall from above. Controls: * Redefinable keys (default): Q up, A down, O left, P right, SPACE swap, B raise, H pause, M music on/off (128K only). * Joystick: Sinclair (6-0), Kempston or Cursor. In the menu, J chooses the joystick and R redefines the keys. * Game setup: up/down choose an option, left/right change it, SWAP starts the game. * Pause: C continues, Q quits to the menu. 128K extras: * 17 AY tunes, inspired by Soldam and Hatris from Gameboy * To avoid monotony gameplay, in 1 player mode the music changes every minute or so, always at the end of a song. * M turns the music off and on at any time (menus, game, pause); a note with OFF on screen shows it's off. Sound effects keep playing. * AY sound effects, with small fanfares for special clears and chains that sound higher and higher. Version history: * 2018: original 1.14 version (48k only) * v1.29 (2026): final 48K version: smooth controls, animated blocks, chains and combos, VS mode against the CPU with 10 rivals and garbage blocks. * v2.08 (2026): 128K version: AY music and sound effects, music on/off key, one song for each rival, Mid-Boss and Final Boss. Things to do: * Attract Mode * Own music and screen for beating the VS ladder (128K) * Correct new bugs (despite all tests done during game development) Many thanks to: -Nintendo, for creating this saga and so many others -Boriel (http://www.boriel.com/wiki/en/index.php/ZXBasic) for his ZX Basic compiler -Dr.Gusman and all the ZX Basic Studio team (https://github.com/boriel-basic/ZXBasicStudio) -LCD (http://members.inode.at/838331/index.html) for the IDE to the ZX Basic compiler -Britlion, for his DoubleSizePrint.bas library and many other contributions -FrankT from WoS forum, who helped with the ASM code that prints gameplay backgrounds -The music composers of Soldam and Hatris for Game Boy, whose soundtrack inspired the style of the 128K music (all the tunes are original compositions) -Devs of all emulators, forums and tools in general to cross-platform development for ZX Spectrum, without whom this would not have been possible.
