A few weeks ago Vladimir "John von Neumann" Zúñiga, a well-known illustrator, decided to make a video game. For his debut he chose the Atari 2600 platform. He was interested to find out what would be possible to accomplish using only 4 kb of memory. Just a week later the game was nearly finished and it was named Drakko. The author already released a beta-version in order to test how the game is working on the real console. This version is available for download on our site.
The game itself is rather simple but addictive. In this horizontal scroll-shooter we play as a dragon. Our goal is to survive for as long as possible, killing or avoiding the swarming enemies. Animation is nice, action is fast. The game has no ending and repeats the same level over and over again. This level is not very long, so Drakko shows everything it has to offer pretty fast. Let’s not forget, that this is a first game for Vladimir. And for a debut it is actually quite nice. It may be a small shooter, but a fun one. A good way to kill 15 minutes – that’s for sure.
The choice of music is questionable, but it is better than no music at all, because without something playing on the background shmups can lose a lot in terms of dynamics. To get a better feel of the game try this video recorded by Vladimir himself:
