The Army of Darkness team has released Pubjumper Mario for the C64. You'd think what's so surprising about it? But the fate of the project is interesting - created in 1983 by an ordinary schoolboy Jeremy Thorne for a local computer goods store, this clone of the game Popeye with Mario in the title role has long been considered irretrievably lost. However, in March 2021, a fan-made knockoff was found after all.
Pubjumper Mario is part of a trilogy of games written by the 14-year-old Thorne. Another, Mario's Brewery, was released in 1983, and a third, Firefighter Mario, was not released, but was saved for posterity in 2015 by Games That Weren't.
At the same time, the author himself is not shy about admitting the terrible quality of his work - they say that at that time and place he wrote games without any quality control, any kind of outside control, for a 4K cartridge and for a 2% royalty. Needless to say, no one at Nintendo endorsed these crafts or was even aware of their existence.
