The year 2021 hasn't even started yet, but it has already begun to bring some very unpleasant surprises. For example, in the world of eSports, a great tragedy happened - suddenly and for not yet very clear reason died 39-year-old Jonas Neubauer, a seven-time world champion in Tetris, a holder of many records, the most popularizer of this game and just a wonderful man. He once did an interview with Ideal Pixel, so you could say we even knew each other a little bit.
We somehow still can't believe that this jolly man, who was genuinely happy even with his 2018 World Championship loss to 16-year-old Joseph Saly (because he led to an explosion in Tetris popularity among young people, and the current champion is 13 years old! ), who travels the world not only to participate in tournaments but also to work as a commentator and simply to promote the game, will no longer take part in any championships, hold a single stream on Twitch and make jokes to his colleagues like, "What, you got smeared on a well by a teenager? Wow, that has NEVER happened to me!" But it can't be helped, such is this imperfect life in which you can't save yourself and then roll back to that point if you lose.
Jonas is left with his beautiful wife Heather (a Dr. Mario champion), his mother, two brothers, and six nephews. Shocked by the news of Jonas' death, the Tetris community has already started raising money for his family, who could really use it. And as big fans of Alexey Pazhitnov's game, we decided to hold a charity Tetris championship* among the staff of KG-Portal, so to speak, a friendly site (he and "Ideal Pixel" share the same editor).
Already today at 19:00 (Moscow time) we will gather a big company of 12 people and pay tribute to the memory of the greatest Tetris player on the NES console (a clone of Dendy is widely known in Russia). This is the version on which all world championships have been held since 2010, so the choice is obvious.
That said, all donations that come in during the stream will send to Jonas Neubauer's family. You can actually support her directly at GoFundMe, but check out our championship anyway - we're not going to be sad, but having fun in memory of a fun-loving man. We'll be sure to read all the donations and say a personal thank you to everyone.
And the following people will take part in the KG Tetris Championship: Mikhail Sudakov, Alina Sudakova, Maria Krasheninnikova, Larisa Mosenko, Lev Grinberg, Nastasia Sheshunova, Kirill Ilyuhin, Georgy Gogidze, Anton Kasharnov, Mikhail Alexandrov, Paul Jasinski and Danil Molotok. Yes, we'll find out in passing who's the best Tetris player at CG (or rather, who has had more practice), but the main goal is otherwise: to have a good time and raise more money for a good cause.
Join us tonight at 7 p.m.! And donations can be sent either to DonationAlerts or directly to Tinkoff account.
