In the terrifyingly distant 1980s, Nintendo teamed up with Sega to release the arcade shooter Space Firebird. In Space Firebird, players control a spaceship that blasts its way through the depths of space. Contrary to all scientific notions, space was not so deserted in the game. And the players' main task was to deal with a hostile and aggressive life form.
And now, thirty-odd years later, programmer Carsten Zenkel is releasing Space Firehawk, a kind of remake of this very game for the C64. The fundamental gameplay remains intact: players still guide a spaceship through the abysses of vacuum, dodging oncoming meteorites and shooting enemy spaceships. The new iteration boasts such features as 12 varieties of enemies, asteroid fields, boss battles, power-ups and boosters, ship and weapon upgrades, as well as a balanced difficulty level and a leaderboard.
